Alex Jong-Seok Lee (he/they) is a Visiting Assistant Professor of International & Global Studies at Sewanee: The University of the South. Formally a postdoctoral fellow at Rice University's Chao Center for Asian Studies, he received his PhD in Anthropology and a Minor in Asian American Studies from the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign. He obtained a BA in Ethnic Studies at the University of California, San Diego.
Alex's primary research investigates the nuanced relationship between gendered and racialized migration, labor, and care. More broadly, his scholarship explores how social relations are reconfigured under the constraints of globalized nationalism. Turning to pedagogy, he has taught university courses in Global Studies, Anthropology, Asian Studies, and Asian American Studies.
Currently, Alex is working on a book manuscript called Securing Korean Skies: Flight Futures, Fantasies, and Technologies of Care, which explores the transnational effects of mobility on South Korean flight attendants.
